This week, we are going to be working on Collaborative Tools. What are collaborative tools? Exactly, what it says –tools allowing you and others to collaborate. You may even be familiar with the old methods of collaborating such as pen and paper, blackboards, and even telephone conferencing.

Way back in April of 2009, Technorati estimated the existence of over 133 million blogs with an average of 120,000 new blogs being created daily. The number is only growing. It’s likely that many of your colleagues, friends, family members, neighbors, and even their pets already have their own blog. You’ll find blogs written about anything and everything; some are focused on a single subject while other bloggers write about whatever comes to mind. Common blog topics include personal stories or insights, technology, politics, news, entertainment, books, business, hobbies, food, finance, sports, and, of course, libraries!

After customizing your blog by choosing an appropriate theme, you may wish to further customize it’s appearance and functionality. WordPress makes this easy through the use of widgets. Depending on your theme you might have 1 or 2, or even more sidebar areas in which to add widgets. Some themes will also allow you to add widgets to the header or footer areas. Here’s a brief overview of widgets, as well as a longer video tutorial that provides an itemized overview of the default widgets featured in most WordPress themes. Take some time to try out different widgets on your blog, it’s impossible to “break” your page so have fun with them!
