Hello to a new semester!

I’m Lisa Hubbell, from Berkeley. This is my 4th semester at SLIS, focusing on Youth Librarianship. When I heard Michael’s keynote at the Library 2.011 online conference in November, I had to find out what he was teaching this semester. His LIBR 287 course overlapped more with my past museum work, so I chose 281. I’m hoping that this class will bring me up to date on many of the technology questions that keep coming up in my job interviews for paraprofessional positions. I look forward to learning more tools for working with students and library patrons, and to the evolution of my own personal learning network.

I have a prior M.A. in Museum Education, and have worked for 20+ years in museums, mostly doing studies of how visitors respond to museum exhibits and programs, and serving on lots of teams to develop exhibits, interpretive media, and grant proposals. For several years, I served on the board and led the professional development committee of the Visitor Studies Association and I see a lot of parallels between engaging museum visitors and library patrons. My move to libraries grows from a desire to make a more direct impact on a broader range of the population. I would love to work as a children’s, youth, or outreach librarian at a public library; or as a school librarian.

  1. Hi Lisa, great to meet you. I’m also excited and interested in some of the same outcomes as you indicated about our course, nice to be all interested learners together here toward the work and play to come.

Was interested by what you wrote touching on some of your past work in museums; that seems very interesting and valuable, the study of museum visitors response and engagement with various exhibits and programs. Peeped at the Visitor Studies Association website some, will have to return and poke around some more; I like the parallel you draw between museum and library patrons in terms of engagement and the importance of evaluation — got my sleepy brain thinking on this Sunday morning!
